Nigel started work in 1982 as a Biomedical Scientist in the NHS and progressed by a circuitous route to the Institute of Psychiatry (King's College, London) where he worked as a Research Assistant and gained his PhD. A move back to the NHS followed were he worked in a laboratory measuring immunosuppressive drugs (initially by immunoassay, then by LC-MS/MS) for the liver transplant service at King's College Hospital. In 2011 he moved back to the North East of England to run the toxicology service at Wansbeck Hospital, which provides a referral service to NHS hospitals in the NE and N Cumbria, including a 24/7 service for ethylene glycol, routine drug screening for local drug recovery services, and post mortem toxicology for a number of Coroners in the region. He obtained his fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2014 (in Analytical Toxicology) and has recently just finished his term chairing the Toxicology Specialist Advisory Panel for Toxicology in the RCPath. In addition he is a deputy examiner (in Clinical Chemistry) for the Institute of Biomedical Science and has research interests in alcohol markers, particularly in pregnancy, with the long term goal of screening for infants at risk of developing FASD.
I have recently joined the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) as a senior staff scientist. At the CFSRE, I continue with my involvement in seized drug analysis and unknown identification. I have also been involved with teaching an instrumental analysis in various master's level courses in forensic science programs. As an adjunct professor, I am involved in teaching a lab and lecture course and provide assistance to students on their various research projects. I recently retired from NMS labs after 43 years. During those 43 years, I have worked primarily in gas chromatography(GC) and liquid chromatography utilizing mass spectrometry for unknowns analysis and target compound analysis. Included in my responsibilities was development of sample preparation processes for existing and emerging drugs. I worked on liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction protocols. I have been involved with method development, method improvement and method validation. More recently I served as technical director of the forensic chemistry division of NMS labs. My responsibilities included the development and implementation of automated data analysis using various software and programs to provide for a more objective means of data analysis in drug chemistry. I was responsible for the coordination of our testing at all the sites involved in our drug testing network. I was also involved in the identification of new emerging drugs in submitted street drug seizures. At the center for Forensic Science Research and Education utilizing additional techniques including LC-TOF techniques. I continue to evaluate emerging technologies for the analysis of seized drugs and drug mixtures.
Colleen Fitzpatrick, PhD is widely recognized as the founder of modern Forensic Genealogy. She has pioneered the use of genetic genealogy Y-STR and autosomal SNP analysis for generating forensic intelligence on cold cases sometimes decades old. Dr. Fitzpatrick’s expertise includes the application of whole genome sequencing to low level and highly degraded DNA, enabling identifications that otherwise are believed to have gone beyond the reach of modern technology. Dr. Fitzpatrick has twice been awarded fifth place in the prestigious international Gordon Honeywell Thomas Cold Case Hit of the Year competition – in 2018 out of 61 entries from 14 countries for solving the 1992-1993 Phoenix Canal Murders, the first case solved using genetic genealogy (2015), and in 2020 out of 50 entries from 20 countries for her work on the 1991 Sarah Yarborough Homicide, the first case where genetic genealogy was used to generate investigative leads (2011). In addition to her work in forensic identification, Dr. Fitzpatrick had been a key member of the teams that have exposed two international Holocaust literary frauds. She has also been the Forensic Genealogist on several historical projects including the Identification of the Unknown Child on the Titanic and the Abraham Lincoln DNA Project. Her collaborations include the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory, the US Army Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Office, the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Jerusalem, the University of Arizona, the University of Adelaide, and other noted professional organizations. She is a member of the Vidocq Society and the only Forensic Genealogist who is a Member of the American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS). Dr. Fitzpatrick is the founder of Identifinders International and the Co-Founder of the DNA Doe Project. She lectures widely in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. She has appeared in hundreds of domestic and international newspapers and magazines, and on international radio and television programs. She is the author of three books: Forensic Genealogy, DNA & Genealogy, and The Dead Horse Investigation: Forensic Photo Analysis for Everyone.
Katelynn Perrault earned a PhD from University of Technology Sydney and a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Sciences from University of Ontario Institute of Technology. She specializes in the development of multidimensional separations for the comprehensive characterization of odors of forensic relevance. Kate is the Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Forensic and Bioanalytical Chemistry, which is supported through several federal grants, foundation grants, and industry support. Kate specializes in the analysis of decomposition odor for forensic search and recovery, and mentors numerous undergraduate researchers as part of her integrated teaching and research program. Her current interests include odor production from post-mortem microbes, development of data processing workflows for multidimensional chromatography, promoting the adoption of multidimensional separations in the forensic sciences, and producing curriculum on multidimensional separations to be taught in undergraduate chemistry classes.
David Rivers is Professor of Biology at Loyola University Maryland. He received his B.S. in Biology from Ball State University, a Ph.D. in Entomology with a concentration in Insect Physiology from the Ohio State University, and was a NIH post-doctoral fellow in Cellular and Molecular Parasitology at the University of Wisconsin. He joined the faculty at Loyola in 1994, was named the Harry Rodgers III Teacher of the Year in 1999, the Distinguished Scholar of the Year in 2019, and has served as chair of the biology department on two occasions. He has served as the Director of Forensic Studies since 2011 and the Graduate Director of Forensic Pattern Analysis beginning in 2020. Dr. Rivers is a member of the North American Forensic Entomology Association, Entomological Society of America, American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and Council of Forensic Science Educators. He also is co-author of the critically acclaimed textbook The Science of Forensic Entomology and conducts research in several areas involving necrophagous flies and parasitic wasps as they relate to legal investigations.
Cyril H. Wecht is a medical-legal consultant and forensic pathologist, author and lecturer who served the people of Allegheny County as their elected coroner for 20 years. He has performed approximately 21,000 autopsies and reviewed or been consulted on approximately 40,000 additional postmortem examinations, including cases in several foreign countries. Dr. Wecht holds various faculty positions at the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University and Carlow University, and serves as chairman of the Advisory Board of The Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law. He is the author or co-author of more than 625 professional publications and editor or co-editor of 46 books, as well as co-author of the popular non-fiction books Cause of Death, Grave Secrets, Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey?, Mortal Evidence and Tales from the Morgue. Dr. Wecht frequently appears as a guest on national TV and radio shows to discuss various medical-legal and scientific subjects. He has served as president of the American College of Legal Medicine and the American Academy of Forensic Science, as well as chairman of the boards of trustees of both the American Board of Legal Medicine and the American College of Legal Medicine Foundation. Dr. Wecht is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology, and is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Association of Medical Examiners. Formerly chairman of the Department of Pathology and president of the medical staff at St. Francis Central Hospital in Pittsburgh, he received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his law degree from the University of Maryland. Dr. Cyril Wecht’s autobiography “The Life and Deaths of Cyril Wecht: Memoirs of America’s Most Controversial Forensic Pathologist” recently printed by McFarland Publishing Co.
Dr. Brooke W. Kammrath is an Associate Professor of Forensic Science at the University of New Haven and the Assistant Director of the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science. In addition, she works as a consulting criminalist, where she is a qualified expert in both state and federal courts. She is a past-president of the New York Microscopical Society (NYMS), the membership chair for the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS), and on the Governing Board of the Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS). She is the co-editor of the two-volume book Portable Spectroscopy and Spectrometry and the co-author of the book Blood Traces. She has also co-authored 2 laboratory manuals, 7 book chapters, 20 journal articles, 1 encyclopedia article, and over 100 professional conference presentations.
Frank Wendt, PhD is a human geneticist in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine and a genetic epidemiology affiliate of the US Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. His primary research focus is understanding the cause and consequence of shared genetic liability to mental health and behavior. His forensic science research foci extend these basic science concepts into applied research questions related to ancestry, population pharmacokinetics, cause/manner of death, and outwardly visible characteristics. Dr. Wendt leads several large studies to understand the human genetic factors of substance use disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and COVID-19 severity as an analyst within the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, the Million Veteran Program, and the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative. Dr. Wendt is a contributing author on 60 research articles, book chapters, reviews, and educational primers published in high impact journals such as Nature Human Behavior, Nature Genetics, Nature Neuroscience, and The Lancet Psychiatry. Dr. Karen Woodall is an Assistant Professor and Forensic Toxicologist within the Forensic Science Program at the University of Toronto. She graduated in 1996 from the University of Bradford, UK with a Ph.D. in Pharmacology. She worked as a Forensic Toxicologist at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto for 20 years before joining the University of Toronto. As a forensic toxicologist, she regularly testifies in court as an expert witness in many different types of trials including drug trafficking, homicide, sexual assault and impaired driving cases. Karen is also a member of the Canadian Drugs and Driving committee which acts as an advisory body to the Department of Justice with respect to issues of drug impaired driving. Her research interests include toxicology and the opioid crisis, the role of drugs in motor vehicle fatalities and oral fluid drug testing equipment.
